Recent events:
Lawyers visit the European Legal Institutions, February 2009

Defying the sudden snowstorm which ground London to a halt on 2nd
February, the lawyers braved the journey to St. Pancras and with
a few minor hiccups all managed to travel by train to the Hague.
The team spent a morning in the International Criminal Courts
learning about their work and observing the trial of Mr. Lubanga
of the DRC, and then visited the War Crimes Tribunal for the
Former Yugoslavia where they had discussions with Judge Bonomie
and observed the trial of Poplovic et. al. They then travelled
to Brussels where they visited the Bar Council and Law Society
Brussels office, learnt about the European Commission’s work
with the legal profession in China and visited the European
Parliament.
The Bar Council and Law Society visit Chongqing and Tianjin,
November 2008
The Law Society and Bar Council delegation led by Adrian Hughes
QC and Neil Sampson visited Tianjin and Chongqing over the
course of a week. Members of the delegation specialising in
Environmental law delivered seminars on various aspects of
environmental law to receptive audiences including both LCTS
alumni and local lawyers in both cities. There were also
workshops on international arbitration and law firm management.
These events were supported by the local bar associations who
gave the delegation a warm welcome.

Celebratory dinner with 2007-8 alumni in Beijing, November 2008
The Law Society and Bar Council team, led by Adrian Hughes QC
and Neil Sampson were delighted that all the lawyers were able
to come to Beijing to enjoy a celebratroy dinner and collect
their certificates, except for
XiangYu ZHANG who was in Honolulu on
an exchange programme. It was a great opportunity to meet with
old friends and obtain useful insights into the lawyers
experiences on the LCTS programme, which will help with planning
for future programmes. The lawyers kindly organised an after
dinner Karaoke session which was enjoyed by the English
visitors. Whilst in Beijing the team enjoyed meeting with Mr.
Kang Yu at the Ministry of Justice and their programme partners
at the All China Lawyers Association and the British Council.

China Law
Council host Chinese New Year
Dinner, February 2008

The China Law
Council invited the LCTS lawyers,
the Solicitor and Barrister
mentors, the CLC members and
the Ministry of Justice to celebrate the arrival of the year of
the Rat at
Imperial
China Restaurant in China Town. The occasion was enjoyed by all.

The China Law Council was delighted
to host a reunion dinner for thirty LCTS alumni on their recent
visit to China. The delegation also enjoyed hosting a seminar on
international arbitration for a group of Beijing lawyers and
meeting with the Ministry of Justice and All China Lawyers
Association.
Bar Council visit to Shanghai,
September 2007
A group from the Bar Council,
including the co-Chairman of the China Law Council, Adrian
Hughes QC, visited Shanghai where they had the pleasure of
meeting the Shanghai Bar Association and Shanghai Bureau of
Justice. In collaboration with the Shanghai Bar Association and
Hong Kong Basic Law Institute they led a successful seminar for
some fifty PRC lawyers. They also enjoyed visiting the CIETAC,
to learn more about arbitration.
Lord
Chancellor's Training Scheme lawyers arrive in London, June 2007
The
Chinese lawyers taking part in the seventh programme of the Lord
Chancellor's Scheme arrived in London on 10 June 2007.
After a first week receiving briefings at the Bar Council and
SOAS and
looking for
permanent accommodation in London, the group begin their
language and legal studies training on 18 June. The group
will be officially welcomed by the China Law Council at a
reception on 2 July which will be graced by the attendance of
the Lord Chancellor.
Heads
of the legal professions make official visit to China, April
2006
A delegation from the English and Welsh legal professions,
headed by the President of the Law Society, Kevin Martin, and
the Chairman of the Bar, Stephen Hockman QC, visited China from
18 to 22 April 2006 as the guests of the All China Lawyers’
Association. This visit was the latest part of the biannual
exchange between the professions in the two jurisdictions.
The guests held
discussions with various major institutions in the Chinese legal
system, whilst in Beijing they visited the Supreme People's
Court, the China University of Political Science and Law and the
Ministry of Justice. The delegation also spent two days in
Shanghai, taking the opportunity to visit the High Court and the
Bureau of Justice.
Alumni reunion
in Beijing, April 2006

Over thirty
alumni of the Practical Training Scheme and Lord Chancellor's
Training Scheme attended the alumni reunion and dinner at the
Grand Hotel Beijing on Saturday 22 April. The main speaker at
the meeting was Neil Sampson, the solicitor co-chairman of the
China Law Council, who spoke about how English law firms handle
international business and manage client affairs. Other talks
focussed on changes to the English legal professions’ structure
and the projected setting up of a UK – China mediation
service. The meeting proved a valuable opportunity for the
alumni to meet old friends and update each other on their career
progress. At the end of the meeting Kevin Martin and Stephen Hockman QC carried out the pleasurable task of presenting the
certificates to the batch of lawyers who completed the LCTS in
2005.
The meeting was
covered by journalists from Radio Beijing, China Youth Daily,
Shenzhen News and BTV-1. The China Law Council is grateful to
the staff of the British Council Beijing for organising the
meeting and arranging the press coverage.
