Lord Chancellor's Scheme

The Scheme's programme lasts for approximately one year, normally starting in London in early June and ending in May the following year.

The programme features 17 weeks of study at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), starting with four weeks learning Legal English, followed by 13 weeks studying English law and practice.

In September participants start a 12-week placement with solicitors' firms, and between the end of February and the end of April a ten-week placement is completed at barristers' chambers.

In the spring, a brief visit is made to the European legal institutions, including the International Criminal Court and UN War Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia.

A number of social events are organised by the China Law Council during the year, enabling participants to meet lawyers from London, around England and overseas. During the year the British Council provides welfare support, and the Scheme administrators will help the participants to cope with any difficulties that may arise during the stay in England.

By way of example, the programme for the Scheme in 2006 - 2007 is shown below. Please note that the Hong Kong placement is no longer a part of the programme.
